Encryption Thoughts?

Well I guess this is more of a general android/lollipop question, but what are people's thoughts on full-phone encryption? Has anyone encrypted their idol3? Have you found it to impact performance? Is there any conflict with root + encryption?

Also, if I have a PIN, but leave USB debugging enabled does that nullify any security I would get from encrypting my phone?
