Had anyone been able to root/unlock the Moto e on lollipop 5.1 that is from AT&T?

I have been trying for days to root my AT&T MOTO E. I have read that it can't be done if you have AT&t, but I was wondering if I could factory reset it to make it eligible for Motorola unlocking, or possibly get a tethered root. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
